The Younger Member Forum
This Younger Member Forum (YMF) is a constituent organization of the ASCE San Bernardino/ Riverside Branch. The organization structure for our chain of ASCE groups in descending sequence is roughly:
Our YMF proudly serves the engineering community in the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Not only that, but we partner with several local charities and non-profits like the Inland Empire Ronald McDonald House, the Falcon Ridge Elementary Special Ed Program, and the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio to give back to the community and make opportunities for the next generation of Civil Engineers!
No need to stay siloed, however! Our YMF partners with our brother YMFs in neighboring Branches like Metro. Los Angeles Branch (MLAB) and Orange County (OC) to provide services to the community. One of our favorites is a beach clean up with a veteran's group in OC and San Diego, Recycle for Veterans!
In addition, we cross the boundaries of organizations and have other networking events with groups like the AWWA Young Professionals, the APWA, and WTS.
Almost done... we encourage industry participation in technical committees of the different ASCE Institutes. The current bulk of our membership does work in Waterworks, Geotech, and Transportation so we have officially affiliated this YMF with the UESI, G-I, and T&DI institutes. With more involvement from Structural Engineers and Construction Engineers we'll be happy to have them lead our connection with the SEI, the C-I, and the other institutes!
Lastly, a more recent initiative in the YMF is to establish a "bootcamp" for dedicated professional skills development in an environment where our emerging engineers don't need to worry about failing. It's intimidating and risky to stick your neck out in your company with so much on the line - tight schedules, overburdened budgets, your company's reputation, and your reputation at your company. One wrong move and your initiative to take on more responsibility or a leadership role can end up costing your organization a lot of time, money, and prestige! Enter... the YMF Career Development Bootcamp.
In the YMF Bootcamp, emerging engineers can take on responsibilities for the group, put together events, and manage teams of their peers at minimal risk to the reputation and overhead of their employers. No unbillable hours. No expensive trainers or training materials. No need to go to a conference and pay for room and board. Just have your boss pay for your ASCE membership (~$200/yr... c'mon) and come on down to your neighborhood friendly YMF Bootcamp where trial and error comes at virtually no cost.
